YSG 3 day August Site Visit and Wild, Wet Camping at Wild Garsdale Pike!

South Lakes Sight Advice 1 day Site Visit October 2023
November 7, 2023On a sunny Saturday we had a great day out with 6 of our YSG members and 12 Univeristy of Lancaster students.
We started the day with checking our moth traps with Sammy Haddock – but soon discoverd that October is not the best time of year for moths – there was only one visitor! We did find some nice fungi and a fine spider 🙂

We then split into three groups – one group installs chicken wire in our small fenced eastern pasture – we’re going to have pigs in here and the chicken wire dug in as rabbit fencing will stop them rooting underneath – hopefully!!

The other two groups worked their way up the eastern pasture measuring any peat and recording vegetation. We are planning to plant more trees here and want to know areas which have significant amounts of peat, so we can avoid planting anything that would distrupt this.

After a well earned lunch break we met with Lochlan Dulson, from Cumbria Woodlands, to hear about their work supporting landowners who want to plant more trees and discussed how they might be able to help us get some funding.

In the afternoon we did more peat measuring up on the peatbog

Busy day and great teamwork – many thanks everyone! 🙂
