YSG & Green Lancaster Students 1 day Site Visit October 2023
November 7, 2023We started our field work with meeting Steve Carver, from Leeds University, and looking at the data from an SM4 acoustic device he had left out in our eastern shelter belt for a few weeks . We got some instant feedback and then he took it back to the university to download and analyse all the data.
It was a very wet morning and walk up the hill to get the recorder, but then the weather cleared and we spent the afternoon digging more ponds on the pastures 🙂

Wonderful muddy teamwork!! …..

In the late afternoon we made camp, by the evening it was pouring with rain again – so we all ate local venison sausages in the shed 🙂

The next morning the sun was out – so we set off to the top of Garsdale Pike with the aim of going over the wall to look at the peat bog on Baugh Fell – but the rain came in again – it was so wet Tamar had to put up her umbrella!
Crazy weather for August – this happens to us every year !! Coming down the weather cleard and we put up the event shelter to prepare for our community event later 🙂

A good few of our neighbours came to hear our YSG members talks and then we had a Q&A session. Really impressive how much our YSG know about the land and conservation.

The next day we went on a site visit to Kingsdale Head – to meet Jamie McEwan and hear about the work they’re doing to create more woodland and restore their peat bogs. A really useful, but very wet, morning !

Our Ponds were looking really good by the end of our stay and were already gaining occupants – lots of water beetles etc 🙂
