YSG & Green Lancaster Students 1 day Site Visit October 2023November 7, 2023
On a sunny Sunday we had a great day with 5 amazing young people from South Lakes Sight Advice who came to help us with our survey work on our pastures 🙂
We spent the day exploring our lower pastures in detail, comparing the ungrazed western pasture with the grazed eastern.
What we found was interesting – although in summer the western ungrazed pasture appears to have a richer diveristy of plants, by autumn the grass has become so thick that smaller species are swamped, By contrast the grazed pasture had many more species, they were just very small and all growing close to the ground.
We had some fun using the Plant Net app to ID different speice and the Merlin Bird app to ID the birds we were hearing 🙂
We also got to grips with the peat probes to see if there was any peat we need to be aware of. As you can see from the picture above some people found some really deep peat – now where is that probe?!
