YSG Site Visit November 2024
March 2, 2025The start of our scrub planting trial. At the December site visit we discussed adding to our scrub area and trialling planting without plastic tree guards. We did some research and came up with three methods to try and a control group. We started to monitor how many deer are around – using camera traps. On this site visit we explored what trees we had, what we wanted to plant, how to prepare the ground by digging out some rush and what willow we had on site.
We ended the day back in Sedbergh warming up with tea, hot chocolate and crisps and working on a funding application

We started the day by some hard work digging out clumps of rush to create clearings to plant in

That got us warm – because it was cold and a bit snowy!

We made some good clearings in the rush – ready to plant in March
Walking down after a busy, chilly but successful day – lots achieved and some new people interested in joining the YSG

Collecting willow whips and learning about different species of willow – native and hybrid, wild and commercial and how to turn yourself into a stag with willow!
