Peat Feasibility Study with Cumbria Wildlife Trust Peat Restoration Team Sept 2024
October 20, 2024Our YSG were on site in June and August and we got a lot done ….
Summer was the time for repairing our boundary walls, digging a few more ponds, monitoring what changes were happening in the one acre plots now the pigs and cows had left for the summer, visiting Kingsdale Head, enjoying an amazing meal at the Black Bull in Sedbergh (many thanks to Nina Matsunaga) and camping out!

There was quite a bit of wall to repair – those pesky neighbouring sheep just keep trying to get over to eat our tasty grass! But at least it was sunny and not too hot – perfect walling weather!

We did a bit of peat depth measuring and made sure our newer YSG members had a chance to explore and understand our bog.

Of course there was time to run about and bounce a bit – after all the hard work!

Walling team and a nice repair!

Time for lunch 🙂

More wall repairs and a rest in the sunshine

In August we had time to cross our top wall onto Baugh Fell and explore the wider landscape. We found a beautiful tarn and skimmed some stones!

Then we got into pond digging – we’re getting good at this! Again a perfect day for it ……..

We had the moth traps out and also footprint tunnels – it wasn’t all digging and walling ..

Camping out for two nights went well – it was mostly sunny

We visited Jamie and Amy at Kingsdale Head again and learnt more about what they’re doing with bog restoration, conservation grazing and woodland regeneration – all the things we’re working on.

We enjoyed an amazing meal at the Black Bull in Sedbergh, where chef Nina enabled us to try all kinds of delicious local produce.

We met with two local farmers to learn about their farming year and how they medicate their sheep to prevent disease. We now want to test our soil and water to see how much of this residue may be effecting biodiversity.

At Kingsdale Head we saw where they are growing sphagnum moss and met some of their galloway cows.
