YDNP Up Skill Down Dale Group 1 day visit September 2022October 2, 2022
The Youth Leadership were back at Wild Garsdale Pike in August for a busy 4 day visit!
We had a very useful few days meeting lots of experts, learning new things and getting answers to questions ….
With Simon Thomas from Cumbria Wildlift Trust we learnt about how blanket bogs function, the unique properties and importance of sphagnum moss and other bog species.
In the afternoon Edward Mills, from Footprint Forestry, came and talked about trees and woodland – building on our knowledge from previous meetings with Pete Leeson, from the Woodland Trust, and workshops exploring native trees and types of woodland.
Great morning, on a very hot day, with David Horner and Austin Sedgely learning drystone walling – learning traditional techniques to restore and repurpose a traditonal structure.
The 4 day visit ended with some camping madness – pitching tents, toasting marshmallows, eating chips, setting moth and mammal footprint traps, watching the full moon rise over the opposite ridge, philosophical discussions and giggles late into the night and seeing what animals had passed by as we slept.
