First Youth Steering Group 2 Day Visit December 2022
February 4, 2023YSG Field Work Day March 2023
April 2, 2023A very full moring out on the hill and the afternoon in the warm and dry. Working in two groups we spent the morning doing prep work for our two main projects.
One Group, led by Sammy, was up on the blanket bog (in the drizzle and mist) starting to measure the grips so that we can work out the best method to block them.
The other group was down on the pasture with Rosey, marking out 2 one acre plots for tree planting. Once we had the plots marked out we then mapped the vegetation in the plots. The plan is to fence the two plots and then use pigs and cattle or horses to break up the group and decrease the dominant vegetation – gorse, rush and grass – in preparation for tree planting. We can trial and compare different things in different plots: for example how do pigs compare to cattle or ponies as effective ground preparers and how do different tree species or ways of planting them compare?
In the afternoon we looked at all our survey equipment and discussed how and when it’s used. Working in three groups: mammals, birds and bats, moths and insects – with presentations to the other groups to share knowledge.
