YDNP Up Skill Down Dale apprentices site visit December2023

The Up Skill Down Dale group had to postpone their October site visit to December due to heavy rain and flooding – that was a good call because we had a sunny, but very cold day – perfect for survey work. It was so cold, everything was frozen and we had to keep on the move to stop us freezing too!!

After having a quick tour of our pastures with an introduction to what we’ve been doing and what we’re planning – we moved up to the allotment bog area and got to work measuring peat depth and recording vegetation. We found that the sphagnum moss was frozen completely solid compared to other species of moss – this was really useful to see as it clearly shows just how much water sphagnum holds!

After a very chilly lunch break, we got lots more useful survey work done in the afternoon
